![]() After downloading, it took around 45 minutes to install Big Sur. If you’re on an older system, you’ll find it in the Mac App Store. While the macOS and iOS get closer than ever in terms of design, Big Sur still feels unmistakably like a Mac - just with a fresh coat of paint.Īs usual, upgrading to Big Sur is a pretty simple process - if you’re running macOS Mojave or Catalina, you can install Big Sur through the System Preferences app. As with most recent macOS releases, Big Sur tweaks some things for the better without fundamentally changing how the system works. If you’re used to how your Mac works and are concerned that the new software will be too much of a change, fear not. I’ve been using Big Sur daily since the public beta was released this summer, and I’ve had the final version for a few weeks. Add it all up, and Big Sur feels like one of the more significant macOS updates in years. It’s not just visual, though Big Sur also features major updates to key UI elements like notifications and control center as well as changes to core apps like Messages and Safari. That’s a little bit of a stretch, as 2014’s macOS Yosemite brought major design influences from iOS to the Mac, but Big Sur’s changes are nonetheless dramatic and significant. That Edge also runs light on CPU and RAM is all the more reason to download it today.Big Sur is different from Apple’s usual annual macOS upgrades: the company calls it the “biggest design update” since Mac OS X arrived way back in 2001. ![]() Safari users will be hard pressed to find a better experience that offers a much deeper set of extensions to choose from as well as greater Web compatibility. In the end, Microsoft Edge for Mac is a fantastic macOS experience that rivals other browsers. That also includes the Edge browser for iOS and iPadOS, where all of the same data will be available including open tabs. That goes for bookmarks, passwords, extensions and more. This cross-platform compatibility makes Edge for Mac even more friendly, knowing that anywhere else you use Edge will be automatically connected and supported. Where Edge can excel is that all of the same data can be synced, but you can do so with any Windows computer – like a work machine. While Safari does an excellent job of syncing bookmarks, passwords and open tabs across its ecosystem, that limits you to just the Apple world. Here’s one area that Microsoft Edge for Mac can quickly pull away from Safari. Software benchmarks are one thing, but what really matters is real world speed. Websites load fast and with better compatibility than Safari thanks to the Chromium engine. However, Edge is hardly bloated and performs admirably. If you need the most minimal memory footprint, Safari is and likely always will be the answer. PerformanceĪt the end of the day, it’s going to be tough to beat Safari on macOS in terms of overall performance. ![]() ![]() There is definitely still some tracking based on web searches, so there is still plenty of work to be done on that front, but it’s less so than with other browsers. Overall, after a few months of use, this appears to work pretty well, and while most people will go with the Balanced option, since it arrives as the default, it won’t hinder performance. In a perfect world, websites receiving this request would stop tracking you, but it’s a cautionary approach as websites can still track your activities even if this request is sent over. As an additional option, Edge also lets you send a website a “Do Not Track” request. ![]()
